Acknowledgments

A special thanks to my wife Fawn, and children Traci, Kyle and Katie for their unfailing support and only occasional complaint of having to help take care of the many different animals we home and breed. My Family is been an integral and fundamental part of our Sugar Gliders and without their help and support none of this would be possible.

Thanks to Klumpe's Kritters, the Breeder wear I purchased my first pair of Sugar Gliders.

Judy Hausemann, In Blue Springs MO who is one of the most Glider knowledgeable people I personally know and whom I purchased 10 wonderful Sugar Gliders from. She has helped so many people learn about gliders in so many ways it is impossible to count. She also hosted the 2003 SGGA (Sugar Glider Get Away).

Dr Skinner and Karen Friedman of Prairie Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic in Wichita Kansas.

From the Author

Hi. I am Scott.

I purchased my first pair of Gliders Karon and Silvia many years ago. Most of my animals are named after Star Trek characters and Karon and Silvia are named after two characters in the original Star Trek episode Cat’s Paw.

My love for animals has been with me ever sense I can remember. Even as a child, I have always loved animals and the comfort, cheer and companionship they can bring humans. While I don’t know for sure if animals will be in heaven I believe that God has provided us a little bit of heaven on earth in allowing us so many wonderful and amazing pets to give us companionship, cheer us up when we are down, and keep us from being lonely. Pets are a wonderful gift that God has provided for us and Sugar Gliders are one of the best pets if you want a small, friendly animal that will bond with you.

Gliders are often called Pocket Pets for good reason.

Sugar Gliders are my absolute favorite pet! Our two Prairie Dogs (Dax & Tribble) and our five normal (K9) dogs are in a dead tie at second favorite. I also thoroughly enjoy the many other animals we keep and breed which are too many to list here as sometimes I think we live in a zoo.

I have put together this booklet as a way to provide my clients that purchase gliders from us and other glider lovers a guide to critical central and needed information regarding Sugar Gliders and caring for Gliders. I originally give people that purchased Gliders from us Caroline MacPherson’s book that is a very good book but was written in the mid 1990s.  I have tried to take the best, most accurate and up-to-date information and put it in this condensed booklet. Please feel free to contact us at info@critterhut.com for any comments.

Introduction:

This is by no means meant to be a comprehensive one hundred percent total knowledge document about Sugar Gliders nor is it an all-inclusive book of all information you may need to know about being a Sugar Glider owner. However, it does include the basic and general information that ALL sugar glider owners should know. If you cannot do a lot of research before bringing your glider home at least know all the basics in this booklet.

There is a vast amount of information collected in this book from many sources and the training and experience of the author. Items in normal text are the words of Scott McCool the author.

An item that is indented in this typeface is cited material. See endnotes for credit of all cited material.

Throughout the book you will find short added sections that start with WARNING or TIP. These sections are specifically designed to warn you about known problems or provide you with a special tip. These small sections, especially the warnings, are perhaps the most important part of this book.  Special attention to these sections will help you avoid problems and tragic events that other gliders have experienced.
